Flexible and Lean continued @ Industries of the Blind
February 16th, 2016 with David LoPresti
The Piedmont Area High Performance Manufacturing Association (HPMA) cordially invites you to our next HPMA dinner event on Tuesday, February 16th, from 4:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. at the Industries of the Blind in Greensboro, NC. If you attended the 2013 event you know it will be a great event.
For 80 years, the Industries of the Blind has served our community through a network of manufacturing and other service facilities. As suggested by the name, one of the distinguishing characteristics of the facilities is that 75% of the direct labor employees are visually impaired. At the same time, the Greensboro location is one of the premiere IOB manufacturing sites across the country and features both manufacturing and distribution of office and janitorial supplies, textiles, apparel and protective ballistic gear.
One of the key organizing principles for the flexible production facility in Greensboro is lean manufacturing – making things right the first time through with zero waste. While the facility has primarily operated under a variety of federal contracts in the past, the current production mix includes a number of commercial contracts as well. The presentation for this event will be led by David LoPresti, the President of the Greensboro IOB. Dave has been at this location for eight years and will be sharing his insights on how the plant has continued to develop an effective culture of performance and how the workforce has embraced lean philosophies. Through this transformation, the Industries of the Blind have been able to pay off all debt, purchase both their manufacturing and distribution buildings, reduce inventory by 30%, build a significant cash reserve, and take on multiple new product lines.
The cost for this dinner event will be our standard $25 per person; registration and networking will begin at 4:30 p.m., with the tours beginning shortly thereafter. Tours will last approximately 45 minutes. Dinner will be provided soon after the first tour ends. The evening will conclude by 7:30 p.m. To register, please contact Bridgett Roach at the Lexington Area Chamber of Commerce: email@example.com or call 336-248-5929. Attire is business casual.
